Nominations are now open for the 2017 Australia Day Awards and Greater Shepparton City Council is urging residents in the municipality to nominate our hardworking community members.
Nominations are sought for Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year (aged under 30) and Community Event of the Year for Arcadia, Dookie, Mooroopna, Murchison, Shepparton, Tatura and Toolamba.
Nominations are also sought for other categories including sports and education.
Greater Shepparton City Council’s Director Sustainable Development Johann Rajaratnam encouraged residents to nominate friends, neighbours or colleagues who had volunteered their time to make a difference to their community.
“We all know people who just get out there and make things happen, lend a hand when the chips are down or go above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to supporting other people, a cause or the community,” Mr Rajaratnam.
“Council’s Australia Day Awards are a fitting tribute for these quiet achievers, and I urge anyone who has ever thought someone’s contribution deserves some recognition to nominate them for the 2017 awards.”
2016 Community Event winner Hands4Nepal representative Talia Humphrey said the award was a meaningful way to honour and encourage the many people of the Shepparton community who united together in this massive effort.
“It was a valuable opportunity for us to reflect and remind us of what can happen when we come together and co-create in this way. Nominations are certainly a worthwhile way to show appreciation and encouragement to individuals or groups who are stepping up and taking action in our community,” Ms Humphrey said.
Nomination forms are available from Council’s Welsford St office, online www.greatershepparton.com.au, from Australia Day committee members or by contacting Council on 5832 9700.
Nominations close for Murchison on 21 November 2016 and for the other towns on 1 December 2016.
