GOTAFE students have experienced various jobs throughout Greater Shepparton City Council as part of their English language studies in the Adult Migrant English Program.
Funded by the Department of Industry, this program helps students gain work experience as adult migrants from many countries around the world.
Council has 13 students for over one week to help improve their knowledge and skills to be able to function effectively in the Australian workplace. Four students have been placed at Child Care Centres including Leslie Gribble, Arthur Mawson, Patricia Smith and Colliver Road. Other students are working at KidsTown, in Recreation & Parks, Building Maintenance and the Projects department at Council.
Manager of People and Performance Virginia Boyd said “this is an excellent experience for those wanting to learn more within a particular field, from building maintenance to child care.”
“It helps students who have migrated to Australia have the correct knowledge and skill set to be ready for the workforce. Council is a great place to come for work experience because we have a broad range of sectors people can experience,” said Ms Boyd.
Balvinder Kaur, Commercial Manager of the Multicultural Education Centre at GOTAFE said, “It is important for our students to gain an understanding of the many work opportunities available in our community and to plan education pathways for their future employment”.
Students were inducted last Thursday and their placement runs until Thursday 12th June.
