Greater Shepparton City Council has reaffirmed its commitment to preserving and revitalising KidsTown Adventure Playground, a community landmark and major tourist attraction in the Goulburn Valley, at its August Council Meeting on Tuesday.
Established in 1995 as a community-driven initiative and officially operated by Council since 2005, KidsTown has provided generations of families with safe, imaginative, and inclusive play experiences. Recognised by TimeOut as one of Victoria’s premier adventure playgrounds, the site continues to offer unique recreational value not replicated anywhere else in the municipality.
Over the years, KidsTown has hosted a wide range of events - from birthday parties and weddings to the annual Mad Cow Mud Run, Easter Extravaganza, KidsFest, and Activities in the Park - cementing its place in the social and cultural fabric of Shepparton.
Following significant infrastructure damage caused by the October 2022 floods, Council undertook a comprehensive review of the site. At Tuesday’s Council Meeting, Council endorsed a recommendation to commence a comprehensive community engagement process to inform the development of a Master Plan for KidsTown, ensuring future investment and site improvements are guided by community needs and aspirations.
The recommendation also approved a budget allocation of $650,000 in the 2025/26 financial year to undertake necessary rehabilitation works at KidsTown in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
The KidsTown site sits atop a closed municipal landfill, decommissioned in the 1960s. Council is actively managing environmental risks through ongoing monitoring and aftercare planning to ensure public safety.
Enhanced connectivity remains a priority, with the Yahna Gurtji Shared Path network linking KidsTown to the Shepparton and Mooroopna CBDs. The upcoming Route 2 extension from Gemmill’s Swamp will further improve access, positioning KidsTown as both a destination and rest stop for families exploring the region’s natural assets.
“KidsTown is more than a playground, it is a well-known and much-loved community asset that has served our region for decades,” Mayor, Cr Shane Sali said.
Community consultation commences on Friday 12 September until Friday 31 October 2025. Further information will be shared in the coming weeks.
