Greater Shepparton City Council has recently adopted new fleet guidelines, with a focus on purchasing green vehicles.
Council has begun changing over its passenger car fleet to hybrid vehicles. Over a four year period Council will change over more than 60 vehicles with 17 being changed over this year.
Greater Shepparton will be one of the first councils within Victoria to have an entire passenger car fleet of hybrid vehicles.
Greater Shepparton CEO Mr Gavin Cator said Council was always looking for ways to become more energy efficient and save money for our ratepayers.
“Council has reviewed its passenger fleet and discovered by changing the fleet it will save money not only in fuel, but we will be reducing our carbon footprint by reducing our fleet related greenhouse gas emissions and also paying reduced registration fees,” Mr Cator said.
“Council recently adopted its Environmental Sustainability strategy and this decision to move to hybrid vehicles is another example of Council living up to the standards which have been set through the strategy.”
“In addition to this decision Council is in the process of changing all its street lights to LED globes and has recently commissioned the co-generation plant at Aquamoves which are significantly reducing our carbon footprint.”
Other Victorian councils changing over their vehicles include City of Melbourne and Moreland City Council operate a number of electric charged vehicles.
