At the Ordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday, Council endorsed a long term approach to public health and is now seeking community feedback on the Draft Greater Shepparton Public Health Strategic Plan 2018-2028.
Chair of the Public Health Advisory Committee and Mayor of Greater Shepparton Cr Kim O’Keeffe said “I am pleased to see a different approach forming to consider public health for individuals and the whole community over a longer ten year term rather than a four year Council term and would like to thank the advisory committee members for their valuable contribution and strategic thinking.”
The Public Health Strategic Plan defines public health according to eleven liveability domains that reflect the basic needs for every individual to achieve optimum health; Access to Food, Arts and Culture, Community Participation, Crime and Safety, Education, Employment, Health and Social Services, Housing, Recreation Facilities and Public Open Space, Sustainable Practices and Transport.
This Draft Public Health Strategic Plan is important to advocate for change, lobby for improved services, work in collaboration across sectors and with community to encourage active lifestyles and importantly, challenge existing behaviours and habits across the life stages.
Council encourages individuals, local businesses and community to get involved by contacting Council’s Active Living team during the consultation period as workgroups are formed for each domain. Involvement can either be in the form of feedback or an offer to assist in areas of interest.
Feedback is welcomed until 7 November 2018 and can be provided via email reply to healthplan@shepparton.vic.gov.au
Hard copies of the document can be obtained by calling the Council’s Active Living team on 5832 9700.
