Greater Shepparton has been successful in securing a round of the revised BMX National Series announced last week.
While the National Series will still count towards UCI points, the newly created ‘Grands Assault’ will run as an independent domestic series.
It is the ability of the Grands Assault to include extra rounds right around the Country and run self-reliantly of the National Series, this has BMX Australia President Barry Knight excited to be creating what he says will be a true national series.
“The planning for a true national series is well underway and we want to see it in every state and territory in the coming years, irrespective of whether a round is held with the Probikx and Chambikx series.
“At this point in time we are planning to have four rounds of the existing UCI-sanctioned BMX Australia National Series next year. We will then go to the Nationals, where the Grands Assault will finish and run in conjunction with the Thunder Down Under.
“The Grands Assault will run in conjunction with those four rounds in 2017, with it being our hope that by 2018 we expand it to eight rounds.” Mr Knight said.
Greater Shepparton Mayor Cr Dinny Adem says “this event continues the region's legacy of hosting significant national BMX events.
"This will be the third consecutive year of hosting this event and it adds to the other BMX events already secured for later in the year, including the pre-titles and the state titles.
"Hosting this event also helps continue to enhance our reputation as the regional sporting capital of Australia.'' Cr Adem said.
The BMX National Series will bring over 500 participants from all over Australia and around 1,000 visitors for the three day event to be held in February 2017.
