Fresh off the back of the busiest January on the major events calendar, the events have continued over the past six weeks and local businesses are reaping the rewards.
The month of February started with another major tennis event which drew in excess of 1,500 players for the week long Victorian Country Week event.
Players and their support crew enjoyed the social calendar Greater Shepparton had to offer and spent their time exploring all the attributes of our region.
A week later the region welcomed around 450 veteran badminton players for the two-day Badminton Veterans Team Classic.
We recently saw an influx of visitors arrive in town for the visit of Richmond and Melbourne to Deakin Reserve for the AFL JLT Community Series.
Greeting their heroes in black and gold, more than 1,000 attendees visited the Maude Street Mall to welcome the Richmond Tigers to town for their AFL community camp before the Sunday game. The community camp saw the team visit Rumbalara Football Netball Club and GV Health. They also attended a fans luncheon following an open training session at Deakin Reserve the day before the game.
Deakin Reserve saw in excess of 5,000 fans, with 30 per cent of visitors coming from outside the Greater Shepparton region.
The annual TatFest Festival also welcomed the crowds who showed up in the heat to enjoy great local food, wine and entertainment. This was the third year the Lions Club of Tatura hosted the community event.
This long weekend, the region welcomed close to 500 BMX enthusiasts and 1,000 visitors for the Shepparton BMX Open. Riders converged on the track Saturday afternoon to practice for Sunday’s race. This was a great opportunity for riders to get a feel for the track in the lead up to their preparations for the BMX National Championships to be hosted here in May.
Also in the region, up to 800 Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander Basketballers visited Shepparton for the Victorian Aboriginal Community Services Association Limited Basketball Classic.
The event was held at the Shepparton Sports Stadium and Visy Care Community Centre from Saturday 9 March through to Monday 11 March with the finals staged on Monday afternoon.
Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Councillor Kim O’Keeffe said these were impressive strides for a usually quiet event period.
“The start of 2019 has further enhanced our reputation as the regional events destination for Victoria. It is great to see so many visitors enjoying our region,” Cr O’Keeffe said.
“We don’t expect things to slow down just yet as we prepare for the arrival of Sir Bob Geldof next week, the Shepparton Festival including the community’s largest multicultural festival, Converge on the Goulburn, as well as the BMX National Championships in May and more events appearing on our growing calendar.
“Council is proud to present a growing major events calendar including a broad range of attractions for all types of visitors to enjoy and experience in the region, helping keep local business busy and our economy strong.”
