It's time to get a little scared! Scary books are heavy with emotions and characters whose decisions you read with equal parts trepidation. Anne Tomietto has a collection of creepy classics to sink your teeth into.
Creepy books are the ones that you reach for at this time of year.
All our micro-trend titles include horror, fantasy, and hope.
These are the go-to Halloween books this year!
Anya’s Ghost by Vera Brosgol. This is a ghost story that is also about friendship. And guess what? It’s the friendship part that’s scary.
The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo. Are you ready for the blurring of the line between dreams and reality? A dead man affects Li Lan’s life through her dreams. Choo does a fantastic job of weaving together history, religious beliefs, superstitions, horror, and romance.
The Girl from the Well by Rin Chupeco. Are monsters born evil, or are they made evil? Is it their monstrosity that makes them evil, or their lack of humanity? What of monsters with a human face? Ready to meet a monster?
Coraline by Neil Gaiman, illustrated by Dave McKean. Imagine leaving for school and coming back home to find strangers who look exactly like your parents inhabiting your home? Read on.
Tinder by Sally Gardner, illustrated by David Roberts. The words are similarly hypnotic. Not a word is wasted. Wonderfully written, fantastically illustrated, Tinder is one of those stories that you know is going to end badly but you just can’t look away.
Half World by Hiromi Goto, illustrated by Jillian Tamaki. The majority of this novel takes place in a Bosch-type hellscape and the people that the protagonist meets there could just as easily be inhabiting our world. One of my all-time favourites.
