If it's flooded, forget it! Driving Safety message for the long weekend

Greater Shepparton City Council, along with the State Emergency Service, is reminding anyone heading off for the long weekend to take extreme care on the roads after the recent storms that have affected most of the state.

NE Region SES spokesperson Neil Payn says “people should take extra care as they take to the roads for the long weekend. These storms are likely to bring heavy rain, flash flooding and strong winds which can create dangerous driving conditions with powerlines, floodwater, mud and trees over the road and heavy rainfall increasing the potential for landslides” he added.

“Motorists are reminded to take care when driving through the area as rainfall may result in floodwater over roads which can be fast moving, deep and result in damage to roads and bridges. At night and early morning it is important that drivers stay aware and alert as floodwater over roads is almost impossible to see, especially in the dark. Remember; if it’s flooded forget it!”

To be ready before the wild weather hits, SES advises residents and businesses to:

  • Put together an Emergency Kit (battery operated torch, radio, first aid kit etc) go to ses.vic.gov.au/getready
  • If your home or building roofs are dry and safe to access:
  • Clear the gutters, downpipes and drains to ensure they are not blocked.
  • Make sure your roof is in good repair: fix loose iron sheeting, tiles or ridge capping
    • Tidy your property, make sure loose items do not become flying objects that can cause damage or injury. Trampolines and outdoor furniture are easily picked up and carried off in strong winds. For your safety and to prevent damage, put loose items into the shed or tie them to a fixed object, like the clothesline.
    • Trim branches that overhang windows, roof areas or powerlines on your property.
    • Listen to local emergency broadcaster radio station for weather warnings and emergency advice
    • Never walk, ride or drive through floodwater. This is how people can die during floods. If it’s flooded, forget it.
    • Stay clear of fallen powerlines; always assume they are “alive” and deadly.
