Greater Shepparton will soon see more than 206 junior basketball teams converge on our region, to take part in the Shepparton Show Me Greater Shepparton Basketball Association Annual Junior Tournament.
The matches will commence at 8am on Saturday 2 December until Sunday 3 December.
Greater Shepparton Mayor Kim O’Keeffe said hosting events such as this helps position Greater Shepparton as a leading events destination in regional Australia.
“The economic benefit of hosting the tournament will see more than $1.5 million injected into the local economy through accommodation, hospitality, retail and tourism spending. Council strives to attract and support the biggest and best events to Greater Shepparton to help create and support local jobs, keep businesses busy and the economy strong and basketball events like this play a major part”
“Sports tourism is an integral element of our major events calendar and this aspect will be built upon further with the new major events already announced for 2018 including Januarys Victorian Country Long Course Swimming Championships, the World Tour Beach Volleyball, Beach Netball, Little Athletics VIC Northern Country Track and Field Championships in February, the Victorian Aboriginal Services Community Association Limited Basketball Classic in March and Basketball Australia National U14 Girls championships in October”.
“This year will see an increase of 33 teams more than last year. It will be great to watch, the basketball players play on 20 courts across 14 different stadiums including Shepparton, Tatura, Kyabram, Numurkah and Nathalia.
“The main hub to watch the players in action will be at the Shepparton Sports Stadium, with plenty of other good basketball right across Greater Shepparton, including Wanganui’s Visy Stadium and Notre Dame’s Mercy Stadium. The event is free for spectators to watch, so I suggest residents to head out to the stadiums to watch local and interstate talent,” said Cr O’Keeffe.
