VicRoads have advised Council that starting next week, the Goulburn River Bridge at Murchison will undergo a comprehensive engineering assessment.
VicRoads Regional Director Bryan Sherritt said the bridge assessment follows on from inspections in late 2014 and strengthening works in early 2015.
“Repair works were undertaken last year to remove corrosion damage to a number of components of the main bridge span where it crosses the Goulburn River,” Mr Sherritt said.
“Due to the age of the bridge and its importance within the wider road network, VicRoads bridge engineers also recommended that a detailed assessment of the bridge be undertaken.”
The assessment will determine any current and future requirements for repairs, strengthening, and on-going maintenance of the bridge.
“We want to ensure that this 1930’s-built structure can remain in reliable condition for many more years to come,” he said.
The assessment will involve a visual inspection and diagnostic testing of the structure both above and below deck level. As a safety measure, traffic will be reduced to a single lane and a 40km/h speed limit will be put in place.
Mr Sherritt said that lowering the speed limit was for the safety of road users as well as those involved in assessment activities.
The temporary traffic conditions are expected to be in place from Tuesday 24 May, with assessments expected to be completed on Friday, 27 May 2016.
“VicRoads appreciates the community’s patience while this important assessment is carried out,” Mr Sherritt said.
“Road users travelling through the area are encouraged to plan ahead and allow for additional travel time.”
