The new sign recognises the area's historic connection to the Greek island of Lemnos and its significance during the Gallipoli campaign in World War I.
The sign features historical information about the island of Lemnos, which served as a strategic military base, hospital location and supply centre during the campaign. Through interpretive content and the inclusion of a QR code, visitors can access additional information and learn more about the significance of this connection.
Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, said the sign highlights important local and national history.
“This display showcases the historical connection between our region and World War I. It also pays tribute to the Australian men and women who served during the war, particularly those who spent time on the Greek island of Lemnos and the important role it played in supporting Australian and New Zealand troops during the Gallipoli campaign,” he said.
The project included community consultation and was developed with valuable input from local RSL representatives, respected Lemnos historians and Council's Heritage Advisor, ensuring the historical significance of the site and its story are accurately represented.
Deputy Mayor, Councillor Geoff Akers, Pine Lodge Ward representative, said the project would help strengthen community understanding of the area's heritage.
“This sign is a valuable addition to the recreation reserve and highlights an important piece of local and national history, giving residents and visitors a greater understanding of the origins of the Lemnos name,” he said.
