Greater Shepparton residents have achieved excellent results in sorting their waste during September 2018 with a green lid bin contamination rate of a low 1.15 per cent, making it the lowest rate recorded to date.
Greater Shepparton City Council Director Infrastructure Phil Hoare said this is an outstanding result for which residents are to be commended. “Thank you to all residents for the steady improvement in contamination rates over time. This is the lowest recorded greenwaste contamination rate,” he said.
“These are fantastic results, and we encourage residents to keep up the great work. This shows us Greater Shepparton residents are thinking carefully about which bin they use for their waste,” said Mr Hoare.
“Putting organic waste in the green lid bin has many benefits, primarily protecting our environment and diverting waste from landfill which has long term benefits for all. Reducing contamination rates in both the yellow and green bins significantly improves the effectiveness of processing and ensures our waste services are sustainable and cost effective.”
“I would like to remind residents that the green lid bin is for food organics and garden organics (FOGO) therefore any leftover organics food should be placed in the green lid bin along with garden organics. The material that is collected from the green lid bin is processed into a valuable compost making the whole process a benefit to our community.”
“Residents have done a great job in separating their waste and maintaining a low contamination rate, let’s continue this by keeping plastic bags and rubbish out of the green bins to ensure the organics collected from households is free from contamination. In addition lets focus on getting clean food and organics out of the red bin and into the green bin.” said Mr Hoare.
