Suitable weather and forest conditions this week will see the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) significantly increase its planned burning program across the Hume Region.
You may see or smell smoke from planned burning near you. If there is no wind to clear the air, smoke can linger for a few days after a burn or overnight. It can also drift a long way from the site of a planned burn depending on weather conditions.
The DELWP understand that smoke from planned burns may cause concern for some people, but it’s important that fire crews take the opportunity while conditions are right so we can reduce bushfire risk for communities and the environment.
At times smoke may affect people’s health, particularly those with heart or lung conditions, including asthma. Older people (over 65 years), young children (under 5 years) and pregnant women are also vulnerable.
People who live in areas where planned burns occur can plan ahead to protect their health. CLICK HERE to prepare for smoke and staying up-to-date on where and when planned burns are expected to happen.
The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) advises people to try to stay indoors during smoky conditions, and if possible, avoid vigorous exercise outdoors. CLICK HERE to find out more about bushfire smoke from planned burns and your health.
People experiencing symptoms that may be due to smoke exposure should seek medical advice or call NURSE-ON-CALL on 1300 60 60 24.
