Greater Shepparton City Council will be assessing the damage caused by last week’s rain and the consequent flooding to local roads over the next couple of weeks as floodwaters recede.
Council’s Director Infrastructure/City Engineer Phil Hoare said some minor roads in the municipality were flooded, mostly in rural areas.
“Council has identified a number of roads that may be damaged but until the water recedes it will be difficult to ascertain the extent of the damage,” said Mr Hoare. “While Shepparton missed the bulk of the rain there has been an impact primarily in the southern part of the municipality.”
“The main areas affected adjoin the Strathbogie Shire, from the eastern to the western boundary. We have approximately 677 road sections to be inspected (approximately 200 kilometres), 23 bridges, 33 major culverts and 1152 minor culverts,” said Mr Hoare.
“We are keen to assess these roads as quickly as possible to ensure they can be reopened or repaired to ensure safe travel. We are aware farmers will soon be harvesting and rely on the roads for transport and access to paddocks. We will need to do remedial repairs with our crews commencing as soon as possible.”
Road closures
There are a number of road closures across the municipality due to water over the road. Drivers are asked to not drive through floodwaters.

Septic Tanks and Water supplies
People in rural areas who have experienced flooding to their properties should be aware of the impact on septic tanks and private water supplies. Contact Council’s Environmental Health Officer for information or visit http://emergency.vic.gov.au/relief/ and click on Flood.
