If you need something to do with the kids these school holidays, why not get outdoors and help the environment at the same time?
Join RiverConnect and Greater Shepparton City Council for a school holiday everyday litter clean-up around Gemmill’s Swamp, Mooroopna. Gemmill’s Swamp has some magnificent River Red Gums and is a valued wetland of State significance. The wetland covers approximately 170 hectares of the Goulburn River floodplain and provides habitat for migratory birds and protected animals including Squirrel gliders.
Gemmill’s Swamp is an important place for the community, recreation including bushwalking and birdwatching. Litter impacts the natural environment and the community including through water contamination, increased fire risk and can cause injury to people and local fauna.
Mayor Kim O’Keeffe said “litter clean ups are a great family friendly volunteer activity to give back to the local community. Helping to keep litter out of the natural environment and reduce the impact on native animals, water quality and keep our area looking great”.
“This is a great reason to get outdoors with the kids these school holidays and away from television and computer screens. Picking up litter can make a big difference to our environment. I encourage families to get along to this great event,” said Cr O’Keeffe.
