Tennis Seniors Australia has announced the Australian Teams Carnival and Australian Individual Championships will be held in Greater Shepparton over two weeks in January 2016.
This will be the first event in eight years hosted by a Victorian regional city, as it was last hosted in Victoria by Albury-Wodonga in 2008. The 2014 event was held in Hobart and the 2015 event will be held in Canberra.
Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Jenny Houlihan said the event would further cement Greater Shepparton’s reputation as a leading sports event destination.
“The event will have significant economic benefit for Greater Shepparton with over 1000 visitors converging on the region with a proportion of players staying locally across both the teams and individuals carnival which would be up to 14 nights each. That’s a huge boost to our tourism sector,” said Cr Houlihan.
The event will be played on up to 60 grass tennis courts with the main host venue being the Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club with the Mooroopna Recreation Reserve hosting the remaining courts which will be set up on the recently upgraded sports fields.
Greater Shepparton City Council Team Leader Tourism and Events, Anthony Nicolaci says the announcement for the Tennis Seniors Australia comes hot on the heels of the highly successful hosting of the Victoria Country Week tennis event in 2014 and the recent announcement of the 2015 Junior Davis Cup and Federation Cup Asia Oceania Qualifying tie which will see 32 visiting countries next April.
Tennis Australia Seniors President Reg Trevaskis (right) was on hand to make the announcement along with President Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club Malcolm Thiel with Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Jenny Houlihan.
