Greater Shepparton was today announced for the second time as host of the Tennis Seniors Australia, Australian Teams Carnival and Australian Individual Championships to be held from 6 -18 January, 2019.
The Tennis Seniors Australia Championships are held annually and are hosted by the State organisations. The championships are held over two weeks, with the Australian Teams Carnival team being event held in the first week across over 50 courts which will be hosted between the permanent Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club courts with temporary grass courts to be built on the ovals at Mooroopna Recreation Reserve. The Australian Individual Championships will be held in the second week at Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club.
Greater Shepparton Mayor Dinny Adem said “this event continues our tradition of hosting major tennis events. We’ve recently hosted the 2014 Country Week Tennis, 2015 Asia Oceania Junior Davis Cup and Federation Cup Qualifying Ties and 2016 Tennis Seniors Australia events. The Shepparton Lawn Tennis scene will be buzzing again in January 2019”.
The Championships will see over 1000 visitors from around Australia and overseas spend time and money in our region.
“This event will be a big win for our tourism and business industry helping create more jobs in the region with an estimated $2 million dollar injection into the economy in accommodation bookings, retail spending, entertainment and dining and tourism attractions,” said Cr Adem.
“As a city we are setting the bar high as we aspire to be Regional Australia’s sporting event capital. Today’s announcement further highlights recent additions to our impressive major events calendar including September’s Victorian Ultimate Mixed Frisbee Championships, Melbourne City Football Club v Western Sydney Wanderers preseason friendly at our redeveloped Shepparton Sports Precinct and the Shepparton Squash International being secured to the region until 2019.”
Seniors’ tennis in Australia is booming and Tennis Seniors NSW President Mick Bruton was excited about bringing the 2019 events back to Greater Shepparton after the successful 2016 event. “Tennis Seniors NSW are very grateful to the Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club for offering to host the Australian Championships at their popular venue. In 2016, it proved to be a huge success, and we are very thrilled to be returning in 2019.”
“What impressed us in 2016 was the fact very little travelling from one venue to the other was involved, and the courts were kept in excellent condition. The local community were very friendly, sociable and supportive of the Event which made it very pleasurable for players as well as spectators” said Mr Bruton.
Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club President Malcolm Thiel was excited by the announcement. “We like to thank Tennis Seniors NSW for choosing our club to host these prestigious championships again. This is a real coup for our club and the sport in the region”. “We receive great support from our local tennis community and Council, and are excited and proud to be able to host grass court events in the Goulburn Valley.” “We look forward to once again providing a world class event for our visitors” said Mr Thiel.
