Greater Shepparton City Council has commissioned Essential Economics Pty Ltd in association with Spiire to undertake the Shepparton Commercial Activity Centres Strategy.
Activity centres are locations that combine activities such as retail, offices, higher-density housing, entertainment, civic/community, education and medical services.
The Shepparton CBD is the largest activity centre in Greater Shepparton, although all centres throughout the municipality will be considered in the Strategy.
The Strategy is to guide Council in making planning decisions for commercial development throughout Greater Shepparton. Detailed analysis of the issues and opportunities associated with retail and other activities in Greater Shepparton will be undertaken.
The work now being undertaken will confirm the strategic vision and objectives for all activity centres, develop guiding principles for the sustainable development of the Shepparton CBD and other activity centres and provide direction for Council when considering proposals for new retail and commercial development.
The overall aim is to achieve a planning outcome which encourages commercial development at suitable locations to meet the current and future needs of the community.
According to Greater Shepparton Mayor Cr Jenny Houlihan, “the Shepparton Commercial Activity Centres Strategy 2014 represents an important opportunity for the community to guide and inform policy makers of their views on the future of their own local centres.”
“I encourage people to have their say and make a submission to help develop this important strategy,” said Cr Houlihan.
Consultation will be a feature of the Strategy, comprising stakeholder interviews and workshops with members of the community.
