The annual Victorian Aboriginal Education Association’s (VAEAI) Wurreker Awards were held last week and two local organisations were recognised for its work amongst the indigenous community.
Greater Shepparton City Council was acknowledged for its commitment to supporting our Indigenous community. The council’s ongoing support included introducing cultural awareness training, which more than 70 staff have completed and is now part of the organisation’s annual training calendar.
Other initiatives include giving the traditional acknowledgment at all Council events, meetings and buildings and the implementation of a work experience program with ASHE.
Greater Shepparton Mayor Dennis Patterson congratulated all involved in these successful initiatives.
“It is fantastic for Council to receive this award and showcases the hard work of our staff and commitment to engaging with and supporting our Indigenous community.” Cr Patterson said.
The Salvation Army won the Community Based Employer Award for its Pathways Into Employment (PIE) Program for women. Sharon Briggs and Tania MacDonald accepted the award on behalf of SalvoCare in Shepparton.
The (PIE) women’s program has also been developed to assist women from disadvantaged backgrounds. The program allows for clients to be engaged holistically with activities that promote inclusiveness, increased self-awareness and responsibility; with a focus on employment as a source of income, self-esteem, and lifestyle.
The Wurreker Awards stem from the Wurreker Strategy developed in partnership with VAEAI and the Victorian State Government and launched in July 2000.
