The Dookie community is pleased that Stage 1 of their Youth SPOT is now completed with local youths able to enjoy the space as of today, giving them a place to gather, play, socialise and enjoy.
The Youth SPOTS will be built across a number of Greater Shepparton’s small towns as a result of Greater Shepparton City Council’s Small Town Youth Recreation Spaces Strategy.
Dookie is the first small town to see Stage 1 completed, and will be holding a celebration on Sunday 24 September to open the new space. Local Band Days of Daze will be performing for the occasion and a free BBQ lunch will be provided. All members of the Dookie and Greater Shepparton communities are invited to come along, check out the new space and enjoy the afternoon.
Greater Shepparton City Council Director Community Kaye Thomson congratulated the Dookie community on their achievement including the outstanding fundraising efforts raised to include additional features in the SPOT.
“I encourage everyone from kids and their parents to the whole community to join the celebrations and check out the new space which has been designed for young people by young people. Parents will be able to get an understanding of where the space is and what it features, and kids can bring along their skateboards and scooters and try out the new space built just for them,” said Ms Thomson.
Ramp it Up Committee Representative Janet Batten identified the need for a youth space in Dookie five years ago, and soon after became the driver of the project.
“The street I live in was becoming the local skating area as it was a downhill run, so I decided to do something about looking for a safe area for skating, scooting and bike riding.
“I would like to thank the community of Dookie and surrounds for everyone’s support in the many Pub Meat, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Christmas Raffles to assist with fund raising, as well as the Greater Shepparton City Council and Councillors for all of their assistance and vision in the development of this project,” said Ms Batten.
The opening celebration will be held from 12noon Sunday 24 September 2017 at the Youth SPOT, (between CWA Gardens and CFA Shed) Mary Street, Dookie.
