Strong community turnout at VicGrid Dookie session

Greater Shepparton City Council acknowledges the strong community turnout and constructive discussion at the VicGrid community information session held in Dookie last night, Tuesday 5 May.

The session drew a significant turnout of residents and others, reflecting strong interest and concern in the proposed renewable energy and transmission developments in the region.

Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali said the strong attendance highlighted the community’s desire to be actively engaged in decisions that could impact the region’s future.

“Our region is home to some of the state’s most productive farmland, vibrant rural communities and sensitive natural landscapes. It’s critical that any renewable energy planning respects what our community values and is based on fair and transparent consultation,” he said.

“We know there are strong views in the community, and that’s understandable. The transition to renewable energy must not come at the cost of our most productive farmland or without proper engagement with the people who live and work here.”

Cr Sali said sessions like the Dookie meeting were an important opportunity for residents to hear directly from VicGrid and have their questions addressed.

“It was encouraging to see such a strong turnout and to see people engaging respectfully, even when discussions became challenging. These are not easy conversations, but they are essential,” he said.

Council noted that, despite the complex and sometimes emotional nature of the topic, the session provided an important opportunity for residents to raise questions and share feedback directly with VicGrid representatives.

Deputy Mayor and Pine Lodge Ward representative, Cr Geoff Akers, said ongoing and genuine consultation was important.

“The Dookie community made it very clear that they want their voices heard in these discussions. This isn’t just about infrastructure – it’s about protecting a way of life that has been built over many generations,” he said.

“Dookie sits in the heart of some of our most productive agricultural land, and that came through strongly in the conversations last night. It’s important that VicGrid continues this strong engagement which we saw in Dookie.”

Council encourages residents to continue engaging with VicGrid through the upcoming Dookie Community Sessions on Wednesday 6 May from 7pm to 8pm and Monday 11 May from 7pm to 8pm, and to seek information through official VicGrid channels.
