Tallygaroopna Children’s Centre students have chosen water as their top drop. The centre is the 60th school or organisation to have signed on to Goulburn Valley Water’s Water Only program since it began in April 2015.
The program encourages people to drink only water and to reduce or remove the availability of sugary drinks during work or school hours.
It also aims to raise awareness of the health, financial and environmental benefits of drinking water – one plastic bottle of water costs as much as 9000 litres from the tap.
Tallygaroopna Children’s Centre Service Leader Corina McLeod said becoming Water Only was a great way to encourage children to drink more water. “We actively promote healthy eating options, so this was a natural next step for us,” she said.
“The children are loving it, they’ve always got their water bottles filled and they know why drinking water is so important.”
Goulburn Valley Water Education Officer Kristy Elrington said water was the best thing you can drink during the day.
“It helps students focus on their learning and gives them energy for playtime. Your body is about 70 per cent water, so you need water to help it function properly. We have some of the best quality drinking water, and it’s so cheap compared to bottled drinks.” she said.
