Next week, Thursday 15 June will mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), the main day where the world voices its opposition to the abuse and suffering inflicted on the elderly.
In acknowledgement of the day, Greater Shepparton City Council and Shepparton Villages are joining forces to hold a morning tea to mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
As part of the event Kaz Gurney from Goulburn Valley Legal Service will be discussing “What elder abuse is and how to prevent it”.
In addition to activities with Shepparton Villages, Greater Shepparton City Council will be painting the night purple, by lighting up the Mooroopna Water Tower and the feature tree in Monash Park from Monday 11 June to Friday 15 June. Illuminating the water tower and feature tree is designed to raise awareness of elder abuse and generate conversations on ways to challenge such abuse and neglect.
Greater Shepparton City Council Acting Director Community Amanda Tingay noted that Council’s Planned Activity Groups will be running a number of activities throughout the week to continue to raise awareness of Elder Abuse within the community.
“This day is a time to celebrate and value the contributions and achievements of the elders in our communities. Council aims to educate and promote respect for everyone, endeavouring to help prevent elder abuse,” said Ms Tingay.
