Greater Shepparton’s Chinese community is ready to turn the Maude Street Mall into a traditional party on 5 October as part of Greater Shepparton City Council’s popular multicultural initiative, Culture Corner.
The Goulburn Valley Chinese Association will use the October instalment of Culture Corner to delight your taste buds with traditional dumplings, fried rice and noodles on offer.
If that’s not enough to drag you down to the Mall, locals can also have their name written in calligraphy, or try their hand at origami.
If that still isn’t enough, the biggest attraction of the day will be the Chinese Lion Dancing and Kung Fu Show on offer. It promises to be the biggest Culture Corner Greater Shepparton has seen since its inception in March this year.
The aim of Culture Corner is to create a buzz and atmosphere within the Mall by highlighting Greater Shepparton’s diversity.
Council Place Manager Bonnie McIntosh encouraged locals to head to the Mall to immerse themselves in Chinese culture.
“Culture Corner has been a huge success to date, helping activate the Mall by filling it with activities and events,” she said.
“Our Chinese community is planning an amazing show for everyone in the region, so don’t miss out.”
Council’s Multiculturalism Development Officer Mr Sarmed Yassin said with more than 14 per cent of Greater Shepparton’s residents identifying as being born overseas, Council is dedicated to highlighting the region’s multiculturalism.
“Culture Corner is about showcasing one particular culture at a time to everyone and anyone in Greater Shepparton,” he said.
“We want people from every culture to experience new things, get involved, celebrate our region’s diversity and have some fun with it.”
Culture Corner takes place in the Maude Street Mall on the first Saturday of every month.
What: Culture Corner, Chinese community
Where: Maude Street Mall
When: Saturday 5 October, 10pm-2pm, and every first Saturday of the month.
