The Queens Gardens in Shepparton will turn rainbow colours on Friday 17 May 2024 for the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) community celebration.
In Summary
The event, running from 12.00pm to 2.00pm, will feature the raising of the Pride Progress flag, an array of free fun activities, food, music and keynote speakers.
Greater Shepparton City Council is proud to host the community celebration, in support of the Greater Shepparton LGBTIQA+ Advisory Committee Action Plan which aims to work with the community to continue to recognise and celebrate key cause days, including pride days of celebration and significance such as IDAHOBIT.
Council works in partnership with the Greater Shepparton LGBTIQA+ Advisory Committee and the local IDAHOBIT Day Working Group comprising of representatives from GOTAFE, Diversity Project (Uniting Care), The Bridge Youth Services, GV Pride, Headspace, Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project, Vincent Care, Primary Care Connect, Education First Youth Foyer, Out in the Open Festival, OMNI Insight and Family Care. The event is supported through State Government FReeZA funding.
Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, acknowledged the important partnerships Council had with the LGBTIQA+ Advisory Committee and key local agencies in the design and delivery of the celebration.
“Council is pleased to be hosting this event once again, demonstrating the positive working relationship Council has with the Greater Shepparton LGBTIQA+ Advisory Committee and partners. We look forward to working on more projects and events in the future,” he said.
LGBTIQA+ Advisory Committee Councillor Representative and Chair, Cr Sam Spinks, said the event held an important meaning for many in the community.
“IDAHOBIT is the anniversary of May 17, 1990 when the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from the Classification of Diseases. The purpose of IDAHOBIT is to celebrate the progress made since then, while also raising awareness for the discrimination that LGBTIQA+ people still face,” she said.
“I encourage community members to come along to the Queens Gardens on Monday 17 May and join in the IDAHOBIT activities. The event can be enjoyed by everyone,” Cr Spinks said.
