Greater Shepparton City Council is proud to welcome back the Softball Victoria Masters Championships for the ninth time, with this year’s event set to be the biggest yet.
In Summary
To be held at the Mooroopna Recreation Reserve across the King’s Birthday long weekend, the Championships will bring together more than 570 players and an additional 150 umpires, coaches and scorers from across Victorian and interstate, as well as many family and friends showing their support.
Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, said it was fantastic to once again host the highly anticipated tournament in our region.
“To facilitate the matches, 11 softball diamonds will be set up at the Mooroopna Recreation Reserve. We are looking forward to welcoming players, officials and spectators to Greater Shepparton for the Championships,” he said.
“These events strengthen our reputation as the leading sporting and events capital of regional Australia, while keeping our local economy strong and businesses thriving.”
Softball Victoria State Operations Manager, Jo Schutt, said preparations were well underway for what is shaping up to be their biggest event yet.
“This year we have 44 teams participating, up from 39 last year, which is the highest number we’ve seen for this event,” she said.
“Our community loves bringing their families and friends to Greater Shepparton each year for a fantastic weekend of sport and connection. Many players have been involved for decades, and with women’s grades from A to F and men’s from A to C, there’s something for everyone – from seasoned athletes to newcomers.”
The competition will also feature elite-level talent including Brooke Penfold and Melanie Roche, both of whom have represented Australia at multiple Olympic Games. The Over 35 Men’s and Women’s teams will also be using the Championships as key preparation for the upcoming National Championships in July.
Council is pleased to continue supporting local groups through the event, including the Mooroopna Cricket Club who run the BBQ and canteen, along with local food truck vendors.
