Greater Shepparton City Council is reinforcing safe road habits among young children through its School Crossing Education Program, delivered by the Safer Communities Team.
The program features engaging 30-minute sessions designed for students in Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2. Through interactive and hands-on activities, children learn how to cross roads safely and develop awareness of road safety in a fun and memorable way.
Since its launch in June, the program has already reached four schools, with more scheduled to participate in Term 4.
Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, said the initiative plays a vital role in protecting children around roads.
“This program equips children across Greater Shepparton with the knowledge and confidence to navigate roads safely. It also reassures teachers and parents that students are developing essential safety skills,” Cr Sali said.
With Greater Shepparton’s population continuing to grow, Council recognises the importance of ongoing investment in community road safety, especially for vulnerable groups like children. “Roads can be dangerous, particularly for young people. That’s why programs like the School Crossing Education Program are so important,” Cr Sali added.
The School Crossing Education Program was developed following feedback from school crossing supervisors and was first trialled in 2024 as part of National Road Safety Week. After a successful response, Council received expressions of interest from schools earlier this year, that wished to host the program.
Council continues to actively promote road user safety and is proud to deliver this program in more schools across our community.
