Greater Shepparton City Council, in partnership with local emergency services and road safety advocacy groups, will host a Walk for Road Safety event on Sunday 18 May 2025, as part of National Road Safety Week 2025.
In Summary
The event will run from 10am to 3pm and will host family-friendly activities including children activities by Activities in the Park, giveaways, guest speakers, opportunities to interact with emergency services vehicles and personnel, and qualified car seat checks by Baby Bunting.
The main community walk or wheel activity will commence at 12pm and encourages community members to walk or wheel around on your bicycle, wheelchair or mobility scooter. Participants will be given the opportunity to honour the lives that have been lost and forever changed by road trauma by placing a wish card on the hill at Victoria Park Lake.
The event aims to raise awareness about road safety, promote safe driving practices, support a reduction in traffic incidents in our community, and honour the impact of road trauma. By participating, you will help spread the important message of road safety and contribute to reducing the impacts of road trauma.
Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, said the event is about both remembrance and responsibility.
“Every fatality and serious injury on our roads leaves a lasting impact on families, friends and our community. Walk for Road Safety is an opportunity to honour those affected by road trauma and to stand together in promoting safer driving behaviours,” he said.
“The event is a powerful way to raise awareness by walking side by side, learning together and having honest conversations about road safety.”
Amber Community CEO, Bernadette Nugent, said the Walk for Road Safety reflects the power of community partnerships in driving change.
“We are honoured that Greater Shepparton City Council is the first local government to host a Road Safety Walk that supports Amber Community’s Shine a Light on Road Safety campaign. This initiative highlights the council’s strong commitment to promoting road safety and supporting those affected by road trauma,” she said.
“As a regional community, Greater Shepparton understands the devastating impact road incidents can have. We deeply value this collaboration and the opportunity to work together to raise awareness, honour lives lost, and encourage safer behaviour on our roads.”
The walk is one of several initiatives being delivered during Amber Community’s Shine a Light on Road Safety campaign in May. The event also falls within National Road Safety Week, an annual campaign by the Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) Group aimed at preventing road trauma and promoting safer communities.
Council is proud to be delivering the event in collaboration with key community partners including Victoria Police, Amber Community, Shepparton Search and Rescue, Neighbourhood Watch, Road Safe Goulburn Valley, Road Safety Education, and Baby Bunting.
Attendees are encouraged to wear yellow, the official colour of National Road Safety Week, as a symbol of remembrance, awareness and hope for safer roads.
