Young writers encouraged to enter 2026 Furphy Literary Awards these school holidays

The awards, which celebrate storytelling’s vital role in Australian culture, have a long history of inspiring young people to share their imagination and creativity through writing.

With submissions open for both junior and youth categories, there has never been a better time for young people to sharpen their writing skills.

Categories include Junior Short Story and Junior Poetry for writers aged 12 years and under, and Youth Short Story and Youth Poetry for writers aged 13 to 17 years.

Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali said the awards continue to support creativity and storytelling across the region.

“The Furphy Literary Awards give young people the chance to express themselves and share their stories with a wider audience,” he said.

“These school holidays are the perfect time to get started. The Furphy Literary Awards encourage young people to use their imagination, find their voice and share the stories that matter to them, and I encourage students across our region to give it a go.”

Prizes are available in each category, with first place receiving $300, second place $100 and third place $50.
