40km/h speed limit across the Shepparton CBD for improved safety

The introduction of the new speed limit will create a much safer CBD for pedestrians, cyclists and those travelling in vehicles.

Based on data from Regional Roads Victoria, the probability of a fatality from a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian where the vehicle is travelling at 50 kilometres per hour is approximately 90 per cent. Lowering the speed of the vehicle from 50 kilometre per hour to 40 kilometre per hour reduces this from 90 per cent to less than 40 per cent.

Greater Shepparton City Council Director Infrastructure Phil Hoare says “Council has been working with Regional Roads Victoria and Victoria Police and has consulted with traders and residents regarding the changes to the speed limits within the CBD.”

“This is a major safety improvement for our community and is being delivered in conjunction with other road safety measures across the CBD including a number of pedestrian crossings that have been installed at various locations over the past year. This change only adds approximately 15 seconds to a north-south trip on Wyndham Street, a small inconvenience for such a major improvement in safety”

“Many other regional cities in Victoria such as Geelong, Bendigo and Wodonga have already changed their speeds to 40 kilometres per hour within the CBD.”
