Greater Shepparton City Council are seeking expressions of interest from locals interested in hosting an activity or event for this year’s Victorian Seniors Festival, to feature in Seniors Week promotional material.
The Victorian Seniors Festival offers older people a wide range of free and low-cost events and activities throughout the month of October. Council are currently planning this year’s festival program, with the theme being ‘keepin on’, and are looking for local organisations who think they could host a great event for our senior community.
Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe said Council are looking for clubs, groups and organisations to get involved to ensure there are a large variety of activities and events in this year’s program.
“Groups and organisations can get involved by hosting a come and try day, craft activities, gardening or exercise programs,” she said.
“Any activity or entertainment that older adult members of the community will enjoy is welcomed. Our senior community play such a huge role in our municipality and it is important that we all celebrate them when we get the chance.”
Local clubs and groups also have the chance to apply for a Seniors Festival Grant to bring their event idea to life. These grants aim to support a range of activities and events that allow seniors to participate in physical activities or attend social occasions and functions.
Funding is provided on a one-off basis to a maximum of $500 per grant and applications close on Friday 13 August 2021.
Cr O’Keeffe said both the Victorian Seniors Festival and the Seniors Festival Grant provided fantastic opportunities to celebrate the resilience of older adults, reconnect and be involved following COVID-19.
“I urge locals who are eligible to get involved in the Victorian Seniors Festival or apply for a grant,” she said.
“Council is proud to support the Victorian Seniors Festival, which is a wonderful event that helps our seniors stay involved and engaged in our community.
“The festival is a great opportunity to make new connections and friendships, all while having fun. I have no doubt this year’s program will be an enjoyable one for everyone involved.”
If you think your organisation could host a great event for seniors, Council want to hear from you. Head to the Shaping Greater Shepp website to fill in an expression of interest form, or apply for a Seniors Festival Grant by visiting the Seniors Grants page.
