Monthly contamination rates of the green bin in Greater Shepparton are at their best since records began in December 2015, with the June 2020 rate at 0.90 per cent. This is the first time a result below 1.0 per cent has been achieved in our municipality.
Greater Shepparton residents have done a wonderful job in sorting their waste in 2020, in particular during the COVID-19 restrictions, and these contamination rates highlight these efforts.
Greater Shepparton City Council Director Infrastructure Phil Hoare said “residents across the municipality have done an amazing job”.
“This is the first time we have achieved a contamination rate below 1 per cent since we started recording our green bin contamination rates. With more people spending time at home during COVID-19, we believe this may indicate residents are taking more care and time to sort waste more thoroughly,” he said.
“As a community we have been achieving consistent and positive results year on year. The environmental, health and economic benefits are well known and accepted from increased recycling and diversion from landfill. By residents making the effort to understand the various waste streams and to put waste in the correct bin makes a huge difference to the entire process with enormous long term benefits for all in the community.”
