Greater Shepparton City Council are engaging primary and secondary schools in the region to help shape Council’s Public Health and Wellbeing Action Plan.
Council is one of 17 local governments working with VicHealth to develop and promote local change to ensure youth in the region have the opportunity to grow up active, socially connected and healthy. Utilising the Kids Co-design toolkit from Monash University, the three year program aims to support local councils to co-design healthy places with students by providing a range of online tools and guidance.
Council’s Director Community Louise Mitchell said the program is an exciting endeavour for Greater Shepparton.
“We are looking forward to working with students to understand what a healthy community looks like to them, and ultimately have their views influence the Public Health and Wellbeing Action Plan,” she said.
“Primary schools will follow the three phases of the Kids Co-designing Healthy Places toolkit, completing a survey, class video and workshop to better inform how Council can undertake projects that address healthy eating, social connectedness and active living.
“For secondary schools, there are eight worksheets that can be completed to better understand how Council can provide leadership in health promotion, coordination, planning, advocacy and the provision of services.
“We encourage schools to get involved and for students to have their say.”
